《福爾摩豬探案之從左手消失的紅寶石》是一部包裹在趣味故事外衣下的精緻童書，乍看是輕鬆幽默的冒險偵探劇，其實每一章都悄悄地把觀察力、邏輯思維與語文感受力的種子，植入孩子心中。故事以一宗紅寶石神秘失竊案為主軸，場景橫跨愛丁堡古堡、市集與豪宅，角色包括一本正經的福爾摩豬、正義感十足的女警冰冰、機靈調皮的了哥，以及不動聲色的幕後主腦。情節曲折離奇，卻又不失童趣。
整本書最讓人讚賞的，是它從不把讀者當小孩。它不急於揭曉答案，而是把每一段可疑對話、每一個動作細節，都設計成值得玩味的推理點，並在每章末尾附上問題，引導孩子去想：「這句話背後有什麼弦外之音？」「這個行為正常嗎？」這種設計，無疑是在訓練一種極為珍貴的能力——對語言的敏感度與對事實的懷疑精神。這並非灌輸所謂「正確答案」，而是一種柔性的引導，一種讓孩子在閱讀中自然而然學會「多想一步」的閱讀態度。
更難得的是，《福爾摩豬：紅寶石奇案》的文字風格簡潔活潑，沒有艱澀詞句，卻保有敘事的節奏感與角色語氣的層次感。即使是小三的孩子，也可以自行閱讀並投入其中；而對家長而言，這亦是一部極適合親子共讀的作品。故事中關於誠信、欺瞞、懺悔與信任的轉折，既可以當作情節享受，也可以成為與孩子對話的契機。
它不聲張地教學，不高調地說理，也不教訓人；它只是一部好看的故事書，只是剛好也教會孩子一些重要的事情。這樣的書，不多。能被孩子一口氣讀完的推理故事不少，但能在讀完後讓孩子開始留意別人說話語氣、思考自己說話是否清楚、甚至開始模仿推理過程與角色演出，那就是另一個層次的影響了。
《從左手消失的紅寶石》就是這樣一本書。明明很可愛，卻很有能量。
